At Alverton, Maths is recognised and valued as an important component of a balanced curriculum and is interwoven across the curriculum using our REAL Project approach. We believe that all pupils are capable of achieving high standards in maths.

Why teach Maths?

▪    It teaches children skills for life

▪    It is a valuable subject

▪    It is used in a variety of ways in cross curricular subjects

The large majority of pupils progress through the curriculum content at the same pace. Differentiation is achieved by emphasising deep knowledge and through challenge as well as through individual support and intervention. 

Teachers assess pupils on an ongoing basis to identify those requiring intervention, which is followed up as soon as possible after identification.

Teaching is underpinned by a methodical, coherent and cohesive curriculum and lessons and resources often follow a “Learn it, Secure it, Challenge it” approach and foster deep conceptual and procedural knowledge.

Opportunities for consolidation and practice play a central role as does the explicit learning of number facts such as tables.

Challenge-based learning, both within Maths lessons and across the curriculum, enables children to apply their learning in a range of contexts.

Our intention is to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to achieve confidence and competence – ‘mastery’ – in mathematics.

▪    You can show someone how to do it

▪    Learning is deep and sustained

▪    An ability to build on something already mastered

▪    An ability to reason about a concept and make connections
