Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6)

Welcome to Upper Key Stage 2.

There are three classes in our phase:

Bodrifty - Year 5 Mrs Williams (Class Teacher) Miss Jenkin (TA) Mrs Whipp (TA) Mrs Andrews (TA)

Bosigran - Year 5/6 Mrs Hanley (Class Teacher) Mrs Stellon (Class Teacher) Mrs Ashurst (TA)

Kenidjack - Year 6 Mr Hammond (Class Teacher) Mrs Petty (TA)

In UKS2 we have high expectations and work as a team to deliver the best education which means that the children do not stay in class groups all of the time. English is taught in Year groups. Year 5 is taught in two groups by Mrs O’Rourke and Mrs Harman / Mrs Clemens with in a mix of abilities and children from both classes. Year 6 is taught by Mr Hammond, Mrs Higgs and Mrs Wicks (Deputy Headteacher) who deliver a tailored curriculum to the children. Maths is set by ability across both year groups. This provides the opportunity to deliver the curriculum at the appropriate pace with a high level of challenge for all pupils to achieve their potential and develop a love of Maths.

We love reading, so we provide every child with a copy of the class book we are using for our Novel study. Most days, the class read from this book together and are encouraged to stop and ask questions, discuss vocabulary, characters and plot which supports their understanding. We use an online reading comprehension site and work on VIPERS sheets each week.

We plan as a team and ensure that the children in UKS2 have a huge range of opportunities both in and out of the classroom, working in classes, mixed groups and year groups. In addition to the many activities which are an integral part of our curriculum, each year we offer surfing, woodland days, regular outdoor learning, enrichment at both secondary schools, swimming, surf life saving and a wide range of visits linked to projects.

We believe it is important to feel confident speaking publicly and encourage pupils to present their learning to different audiences throughout the year. We also take part in the Rotary club public speaking competition each year, sending at least two teams.

In the summer term we offer residential trips. At Year 5 we go to Porthpean Centre where children sleep in tents and can canoe, kayak, coast steer and do archery, climbing and high ropes. Year 6 go to London for a packed itinerary which takes in the London Eye, HMS Belfast, a musical show, a tour around St Pauls, eating at restaurants, a river cruise and a day at LegoLand.

In Year 6 pupils take part in the Fiver challenge, an entrepreneurial challenge and they get the opportunity to decide how to use or spend the profits.

Pupils in UKS2 are encouraged to take a hand in the running of their school through the huge range of jobs available. We increase the range of responsibilities at Year 6 expecting all pupils to get involved in some aspect of school life. At the end of Year 5, we run a Hustings for the new Parliament and all pupils have the chance to run for a Minister’s role (please click on the link to see the range of roles available). We also have places on the School Council, Sports Leader jobs, Librarians and Digital Leaders.
