Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

Welcome to Key Stage 1 at Alverton School!

Infants at Alverton are taught in three classes:
Puffins (Year 1) - Mrs Hughes (teacher), Mrs Goddard (teacher), Miss Roberts (TA)
Owls (Year 1&2) - Mrs Clive (teacher), Miss Ching (TA)
Kingfishers (Year 2) - Mr Dawe (teacher), Mrs Oakes (TA)

The teachers of all three classes plan collaboratively together to ensure that the children across the Key Stage enjoy similar opportunities and challenges. We aim to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment in which children can thrive and flourish.

Learning in Key Stage 1 is themed around a rolling programme of termly topics with each curriculum subject area being taught discretely within each topic  We retain a strong focus on the core curriculum of Reading, Writing and Maths as we believe these are the keys to 'unlocking' learning in Key Stage 2 and beyond.

We strive to ensure that our teaching and learning are purposeful and to this end we work towards meaningful end of topic outcomes. Over the recent years, our topic outcomes have included a medieval summer fair, a fundraising event for the World Wildlife Fund, an art exhibition at Penlee Gallery, the publication of volumes of our own fairytales, the construction of a school wildlife garden and the performance of our own original Nativity play!
